late 19th to early 20th century, fitted for 28in. barrels (could adapt to 30in.), red baize-lined interior with 'THOMAS JOHNSON & SON. GUN AND RIFLE MANUFACTURERS. SWAFFHAM NORFOLK' trade label (some oil staining and damage), the lid interior marked 'R. HENRY MELLERSH. GODALMING. SURREY.'

Provenance: Robert Henry Mellersh (1864 - 1921) is recorded as being a solicitor in Godalming, Surrey. The Mellersh family set up the private Godalming Bank in 1814
